Alan Shepard Rides a Rocket to the Stars

On 5 May 1961 astronaut Alan Shepard, riding in the Mercury capsule christened Freedom 7, became the first American in space. Launched from Cape Canaveral atop a Redstone booster rocket, Shepard’s historic sub-orbital flight lasted 15 minutes and 28 seconds.
