The Language of Letting Go: Required Reading for Worrying Parents

A unique daily meditation book by Melody Beattie focused on self-care, especially for people with relationships that need healthy boundaries.

One of my absolute favorite poems on being a parent is by Kahlil Gibran, published in The Prophet, a collection of prose poems that discuss love and life. One section, “On Children” has an especially poignant metaphor for parents: “You are the bows from which your children, as living arrows, are set forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.” Gibran understood well the language of letting go. Parenting means playing the bow to your arrow-child as you aim them forward in life.

You are the bows from which your children, as living arrows, are set forth.

A bow’s purpose is literally to let loose the arrows, and if they ever really hold arrows at all it is tenuous. So the title of Melody Beattie’s book is very fitting for parents; “The Language of Letting Go” is especially wonderful in the daily reminders that our main focus is to be healthy for our children and not attempt to control them, or turn them into miniatures of ourselves, or force them to be perfect, or any of the other pitfalls parents fall into when worrying about their children’s futures.

The Language of Letting Go

The Language of Letting Go is formatted with a reading for every day of the year (including February 29th!) and I tend to read the exact date. The reading on my birthday is one I return to frequently when I feel the need to refocus my attitude. This book is a meditation tool that can be used before you sit quietly, or if meditation isn’t your thing it can be a bed time reflection as you reflect over your day. I find that I’ve learned tips for being a better mother from reading this and others of Melody Beattie’s books. Order it today from Amazon:
